Lewis Morris Reeves Obituary

Lewis Morris Reeves, 94, passed peacefully away in Henderson, NV on February 27, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. His wife of 73 years, Helen Marie (Lancaster Heslep) Reeves, passed away in 2023. Lewis and Helen are survived by son John David Reeves, Boulder City, NV; daughter Mary Helen Reeves and her husband Donald Meeks; and daughter Martha Elizabeth Reeves, all of Henderson, NV. Lewis and Helen also have three grandchildren and their spouses, and four great grandchildren.

Lewis was born on February 15, 1930, in Alden, KS, moving in 1931 with his father, Morris Lewis, his mother, Mary Alice (Mosher), brother, Curt, and sisters Myrna (Joyce), Betty (Sullivan), Mary Ann (Fort), and Rosie (Denton) to Ulysses, KS. Lewis grew up in Ulysses and married Helen there in 1949. As part of a farming family that moved to the area during the 30's, Lewis, also known as Louie, witnessed the Dust Bowl, growth of widespread irrigation, and the development of the Hugoton Gas Field. He attended the University of Kansas as an engineering student in 1948 - 1949, and then, as a young man while raising his family, he farmed, then became plant manager at the local ready mix plant until 1977. Following a lifelong interest in numismatics and certification by the American Numismatic Association, Louis and Helen established Mariposa Coins, a company that evaluated, bought , and sold silver and gold coins and estates. With Mariposa, Louie and Helen traveled extensively in the U.S. Having visited Nevada on Mariposa business, in 1987 they moved to Boulder City. In retirement, both continued to work for a while at local casinos, while enjoying U.S. and international travel, theater, local entertainment, and family visits.

Lewis was deeply committed to serving others, particularly through his 54-year-long participation in a 12-step program which transformed his and his family's lives. The many meaningful, lifelong relationships he and Helen had as part of this community are an enduring and respected legacy of his life. Lewis was an exceptional father, along with Helen encouraging their children to obtain educations and, as adults, to live full and meaningful lives. He was charming, steady, wise, thoughtful, and kind. He was smart and active, interested in life and people, the natural world, and history, reading widely until days before his death. Both he and Helen were young-at-heart and a joy to be around.

No formal memorial service is planned. Those seeking to honor Lewis may wish to make donations to Nathan Adelson Hospice, Las Vegas, NV.
