Boulder City, NV - Emily Carol Angelo was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 18, 1949 to Henning Verner Westberg and Marion Katherine (Ruel) Westberg. She spent her adolescence in the Twin Cities area and was the middle of three children, Paula J. Westberg, now of Boston, and Valerie K. Westberg, now of San Diego.
Ms. Angelo grew up with deep admiration for military service, with her father being a decorated World War II U.S. Navy veteran. After moving to San Diego with her family in her youth, she later relocated to Massachusetts, where she enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968. She served until 1971 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal following her assignment at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. During her service, she received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Following her military service, Ms. Angelo pursued studies at MiraCosta College and San Diego State University in sociology and social work. She also worked in administrative roles within government agencies in Phoenix and later at the UC San Diego Health System.
Ms. Angelo lived for many years between San Diego, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, and for more than a decade made her home in the Las Vegas and Boulder City areas. She carried lifelong pride as a Marine and disabled veteran, and sought opportunities to give back to fellow veterans and individuals living with PTSD.
She was equally devoted to her love of animals, dedicating time and resources to rescuing and rehabilitating homeless cats and volunteering with local animal shelters, including the Humane Society. Other passions included gardening, cooking — especially her goulash, Swedish crepes, and tacos — scrapbooking, and following sports such as football and tennis. From a young age, she was also a gifted writer and poet.
On August 28, 1972, she welcomed a son with Andy Anderson, Michael "Mike" Charles Anderson, who passed on March 29, 2014 at the age of 41. On January 22, 1990, she welcomed a daughter with Richard Stephen Angelo, Ianna Marie Angelo, who lives in New York City.
Emily will be remembered for her kind heart, her devotion to animals, her sense of humor, and the care she showed to those around her.
She was loved.
A memorial will be planned for a later date in 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of the United States or to an animal rescue organization in one's local community.
